The world is coming to Kansas City.
With the FIFA World Cup coming to KC, GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium will host matches that bring international fans, packed parking lots, and some of the biggest game-day energy our city has ever seen.
At McCarthy Chevrolet Lee’s Summit, we’re just as excited—but we also know one thing is certain:
Game day success starts before you ever reach the stadium.
From tailgating essentials to transportation planning, here’s your complete guide to getting ready for World Cup match days in Kansas City.
⚽ Kansas City Is a World Cup Host City
Kansas City will welcome multiple FIFA World Cup matches at:

The stadium is being transformed for the tournament, with FIFA branding changes and major operational updates to handle global crowds.
That means one thing for fans:
Plan ahead, arrive early, and expect heavy traffic.
🚗 Step 1: Getting There Isn’t “Just a Drive”
Arrowhead is about 15 km from downtown Kansas City, and match days will bring:
- Heavy congestion on I-70 and I-435
- Road closures near the stadium perimeter
- Limited and pre-reserved parking zones
- Increased security checkpoints around the Truman Sports Complex
Traffic flow will be tightly controlled on match days, with restricted access around key roads leading into the stadium area.
👉 Translation: Your normal game-day route will NOT feel normal.
That’s why many fans from Lee’s Summit are planning:
- Early departures (hours before kickoff)
- Carpooling
- Rideshare drop-off strategies
- Or larger vehicles for group travel and gear

🍔 Step 2: Tailgating Checklist for World Cup Match Days
Kansas City tailgating is already legendary—but the World Cup takes it to another level.
Make sure you’re ready with:
🧊 Food & Drinks
- Coolers with ice and drinks
- Easy grill items or pre-packed snacks
- Plates, napkins, utensils
🪑 Setup & Comfort
- Folding chairs
- Portable table
- Shade canopy (KC summer heat is real)
⚽ Game Day Energy
- Flags and jerseys
- Soccer balls for pre-game fun
- Portable speaker for hype playlists
🔋 Must-Haves
- Portable phone chargers
- Sunscreen and hats
- Trash bags for cleanup
💡 Important note: Tailgating will likely be more restricted than typical NFL games due to security and space limitations.
🅿️ Step 3: Parking & Timing Strategy
Expect a very different parking experience than a normal Chiefs game:
- Many lots require pre-purchased passes only
- Fewer general parking spots available
- Longer exit times after matches
- Heavy enforcement of designated zones only
Some reports indicate parking capacity will be significantly reduced and reserved for operations, hospitality, and security use.
🚦 Game Day Tips:
- Arrive 3–5 hours early
- Do NOT rely on last-minute parking
- Pre-plan your exit strategy before kickoff
- Mark your parking location (seriously—it all looks the same at night)
🚙 Step 4: Why Your Vehicle Choice Matters
World Cup match days aren’t just about getting there—they’re about everything around it:
- Comfort in traffic delays
- Space for tailgating gear
- Easy loading/unloading
- Room for friends and family
- Reliable stop-and-go performance
That’s why SUVs and trucks will be in high demand during tournament season.
🚇 Step 5: Transportation Options Are Expanding
Kansas City is also rolling out expanded transit and shuttle options for World Cup fans, including park-and-ride style services and stadium direct buses designed to reduce congestion.
Still, many fans will combine:
- Driving to park-and-ride locations
- Rideshare into designated drop zones
- Downtown connections via transit systems
Planning ahead will be the difference between a smooth experience and a stressful one.
